Repeating Patterns

A pattern repeats over and over — once you see the rule, you can predict what comes next!

A REPEATING PATTERN is a sequence that repeats over and over in the same order. Patterns have a "core" — the smallest part that repeats. Once you know the core, you can predict what comes next!

AB pattern — the core repeats every 2 items:

🔴🔵🔴🔵🔴🔵🔴

Red, Blue, Red, Blue … What comes next? RED! The core is AB (two different items).

ABC pattern — the core repeats every 3 items:

🌙❤️🌙❤️

Star, Moon, Heart, Star, Moon, Heart … What comes next? MOON!

🎨Pattern types
AB pattern: 🍎 🍌 🍎 🍌 🍎 🍌 …
ABB pattern: 🔴 🔵 🔵 🔴 🔵 🔵 …
AAB pattern: 🐱 🐱 🐶 🐱 🐱 🐶 …
ABC pattern: 🌟 ❤️ 🔵 🌟 ❤️ 🔵 …

How to find the core of a pattern:

1Look for the smallest group that seems to repeat
2Check: does the next group match exactly?
3The repeating group is the CORE
4Use the core to predict what comes next!
✏️ Try It!

What comes next? 🐶 🐱 🐶 🐱 🐶 ___

💡

Remember This!

Clap the pattern out loud! Say "A" for the first type and "B" for the second. Hearing the rhythm helps you feel the pattern, not just see it!
