A STORY PROBLEM wraps a math question inside a little story. Your job is to read it carefully, find the numbers, and decide: do we ADD or SUBTRACT?

Tom has 3 sheep. 🐑🐑🐑
He gets 4 more sheep. 🐑🐑🐑🐑

How many sheep does he have now?
→ 3 + 4 = 7 sheep!
🍩A subtraction story
There are 8 donuts. 🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩
The class eats 5 of them.

How many are left?
→ 8 − 5 = 3 donuts left!

How to solve a story problem:

1Read (or listen to) the story all the way through
2Find the numbers in the story
3Ask: are we joining groups (add) or taking away (subtract)?
4Write the number sentence
5Solve it and check if your answer makes sense
