Skip counting is like hopping over numbers — count 2 at a time or 5 at a time!
SKIP COUNTING means jumping over numbers in equal hops. When you skip count by 2s, you land on every even number. When you skip count by 5s, you land on multiples of 5. Both skills help you count money and tell time!
Skip counting by 2s (to 20):
Hop by 2s on the number line:
Each hop adds 2. We land on even numbers: 2, 4, 6, 8 …
Skip counting by 5s (to 50):
One hand = 5 fingers 🖐 → 5 Two hands = 10 fingers 🖐🖐 → 10 Keep going: 🖐🖐🖐 = 15 | 🖐🖐🖐🖐 = 20
What comes next when skip counting by 5s? 5, 10, 15, 20, ___
Remember This!
Skip counting by 5s is how we count nickels! Each nickel = 5¢. Count 5¢, 10¢, 15¢, 20¢ … just like skip counting!
