Put shapes together to build brand-new, bigger shapes!
A COMPOSITE SHAPE is a new shape made by putting two or more shapes together. When you combine triangles, squares, and rectangles, you can create houses, rockets, robots, and more! You can also take apart a composite shape to find the shapes hiding inside.
Building a house from shapes:
1 triangle (roof) + 3 squares (walls and door) = a house! đ
đē Triangle (nose cone) đĻ Rectangle (body) đēđē Two small triangles (fins) Combine them: 1 triangle + 1 rectangle + 2 triangles = ROCKET đ
Take two identical right triangles. Flip one and place it next to the other. đē + đģ = âŦ Rectangle! And two rectangles can make a big square!
How to compose (build) shapes:
Two squares placed side by side (touching along one full edge) make what shape?
Remember This!
Use pattern blocks or tangram pieces to practice building composite shapes. Try making an animal, a house, or a robot using only triangles and squares!
