Building Composite Shapes

Put shapes together to build brand-new, bigger shapes!

A COMPOSITE SHAPE is a new shape made by putting two or more shapes together. When you combine triangles, squares, and rectangles, you can create houses, rockets, robots, and more! You can also take apart a composite shape to find the shapes hiding inside.

Building a house from shapes:

1 triangle (roof) + 3 squares (walls and door) = a house! 🏠

🚀Building a rocket
đŸ”ē Triangle (nose cone)
đŸŸĻ Rectangle (body)
đŸ”ēđŸ”ē Two small triangles (fins)

Combine them: 1 triangle + 1 rectangle + 2 triangles = ROCKET 🚀
🧩Two triangles make a rectangle
Take two identical right triangles.
Flip one and place it next to the other.

đŸ”ē + đŸ”ģ = â–Ŧ Rectangle!

And two rectangles can make a big square!

How to compose (build) shapes:

1Choose your base shapes (triangles, squares, rectangles, etc.)
2Think about what new shape you want to make
3Flip, slide, or turn the pieces to fit together
4Make sure there are no gaps or overlaps between pieces
5Name the new composite shape you created!
