Halves and Quarters

Split shapes into equal parts — halves are 2 equal parts, quarters are 4!

When we split a shape into EQUAL parts, each part has a special name. Two equal parts = HALVES (each part is one-half or 1/2). Four equal parts = QUARTERS or FOURTHS (each part is one-quarter or 1/4). The parts MUST be equal — the same size!

Splitting a pizza into halves:

🍕2=🫓🫓

One whole pizza split into 2 equal parts. Each part is ONE HALF!

🥧Halves and quarters of a pie
WHOLE pie: 1 piece 🥧

Cut in HALF (÷2):
2 equal pieces — each is 1/2

Cut into QUARTERS (÷4):
4 equal pieces — each is 1/4

Each quarter is smaller than each half!

Halves (2 equal parts)

1/2 + 1/2 = 1 wholeEach half is bigger

Quarters (4 equal parts)

1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 = 1 wholeEach quarter is smaller

More parts = smaller parts! A quarter is smaller than a half.

⚠️

The parts MUST be equal! An unequal split is NOT a half or quarter.

✏️ Try It!

A sandwich is cut into 4 EQUAL pieces. What is each piece called?

💡

Remember This!

When you share a cookie fairly with 1 friend, you each get a HALF. When you share with 3 friends (4 people total), you each get a QUARTER!
