Telling Time: Hour & Half-Hour

Clocks tell us what time it is — let's learn to read the hour and half-hour!

An analog clock has two hands. The SHORT hand points to the HOUR. The LONG hand points to the MINUTES. When the long hand points straight up (to 12), it's the exact hour. When it points straight down (to 6), it's the half-hour — 30 minutes past.

Parts of a clock face:

The clock is divided into 12 sections. The short hand tells hours; the long hand tells minutes!

🕒Reading 3:00 (three o'clock)

Short hand → pointing at 3
Long hand  → pointing at 12

This means it is exactly 3 o'clock!
We write it as 3:00.

🕠Reading 5:30 (half past five)

Short hand → pointing between 5 and 6
Long hand  → pointing at 6 (straight down)

This means 30 minutes after 5 — half past five!
We write it as 5:30.

How to read a clock:

1Find the SHORT hand first — it tells the hour

2If the long hand is on 12: say "___ o'clock" (e.g., 7:00)

3If the long hand is on 6: say "half past ___" or "_:30" (e.g., 7:30)

4Write the hour, then a colon (:), then the minutes
