Hundreds, tens, and ones — three-digit numbers have three important places!
Three-digit numbers have THREE places: HUNDREDS on the left, TENS in the middle, and ONES on the right. Each place has a value 10 times greater than the place to its right. Knowing the value of each digit is the key to understanding big numbers!
Breaking apart the number 362:
3 hundreds (300) + 6 tens (60) + 2 ones (2) = 362!
In the number 548: • 5 is in the HUNDREDS place → 5 × 100 = 500 • 4 is in the TENS place → 4 × 10 = 40 • 8 is in the ONES place → 8 × 1 = 8 500 + 40 + 8 = 548
