Shapes by Angles and Faces

Count the angles and faces to identify any shape like a geometry expert!

An ANGLE is the space formed where two sides meet at a corner. A FACE is a flat surface on a 3D shape. In Grade 2, we sort and identify shapes by counting their angles and faces. A square has 4 right angles; a triangle has 3 angles (which may be different sizes).

The number of angles (2D) or faces (3D) helps us name and classify shapes!

🔎A right angle (square corner)
A RIGHT ANGLE looks like the corner of a square âŦ› or a book.
It is exactly 90°.

Shapes with right angles: square, rectangle, some triangles.

Test it: place the corner of a piece of paper on the angle — if it fits perfectly, it's a right angle! 📄

How to classify a shape by its angles:

1Count the number of sides → that gives the number of angles too
2Look at each angle: is it a right angle (90°), smaller, or larger?
3A shape with 4 right angles must be a rectangle or square
4A triangle can have different angle sizes depending on its type
