Estimating Lengths

Estimation is a smart guess — close to right without measuring exactly!

ESTIMATING means making a smart guess about a measurement without using a ruler. A good estimate uses a reference you already know (like knowing a standard pencil is about 19 cm long) and compares the unknown object to it.

✏️Using a pencil as a reference
A standard pencil ≈ 19 cm long.

Your book looks about as long as 1.5 pencils.
→ Estimate: 1.5 × 19 ≈ about 28–30 cm.

Measure and check — how close was your guess?

How to make a good estimate:

1Choose a reference object whose size you know (a pencil, a hand, a foot)
2Compare the unknown object to your reference visually
3Ask: is it about the same? Bigger? How many times bigger?
4Multiply or adjust your reference size to match
5State your estimate with a unit: "about 30 centimeters"

A good estimate is in the right ballpark! Use references to avoid wildly wrong guesses.
