Equal Groups: The Start of Multiplication

Equal groups are the foundation of multiplication — let's explore the pattern!

When we put objects into EQUAL GROUPS, every group has the exact same number of things. We can find the total by repeated addition — adding the same number over and over. This is the big idea behind multiplication!

3 groups of 4 stars:

⭐⭐⭐⭐|⭐⭐⭐⭐|⭐⭐⭐⭐

3 groups × 4 stars each = 4 + 4 + 4 = 12 stars in total!

🍪Cookie trays
Each tray holds 5 cookies. 🍪🍪🍪🍪🍪
There are 4 trays.

5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20 cookies

We can say: 4 groups of 5 = 20!
🐟Fish in tanks
6 fish tanks. 🐠 Each tank has 3 fish.

3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 18 fish

6 groups of 3 = 18!

How to count equal groups:

1Count how many groups there are
2Count how many are in each group (they must be equal!)
3Add the group size repeatedly: group size + group size + ...
4The total is your answer
✏️ Try It!

There are 5 bags. Each bag has 4 🍬 candies. How many candies in all?

💡

Remember This!

Skip count to find the total faster! For 3 groups of 6: skip count by 6 — 6, 12, 18. Three hops of 6 = 18!
