Equivalent Fractions

Different fractions can name the same amount — they are equivalent!

Two fractions are EQUIVALENT if they take up the same amount of the whole, even if they look different. For example, 1/2 and 2/4 and 3/6 all describe the same-sized piece of a whole.

1/2 of a rectangle

🟦🟦⬜⬜ → 2 shaded out of 4 = 2/4

2/4 of a rectangle

🟦🟦⬜⬜ → same shaded area!

1/2 = 2/4. They cover exactly the same region!

How to find equivalent fractions:

1Start with your fraction (e.g., 1/3)
2Multiply BOTH the numerator and denominator by the same number
1/3 → multiply by 2/2 → 2/6
1/3 → multiply by 3/3 → 3/9
5All of these equal the same amount: 1/3 = 2/6 = 3/9
12=24=36=48\frac{1}{2} = \frac{2}{4} = \frac{3}{6} = \frac{4}{8}
🍫Chocolate bar
A bar split into 2 equal pieces, 1 shaded = 1/2.
The same bar split into 4 pieces, 2 shaded = 2/4.
Same amount of chocolate! 1/2 = 2/4.
💡

Remember This!

To CHECK if two fractions are equivalent, cross-multiply: if a/b = c/d, then a × d should equal b × c. Example: 1/2 vs 3/6 → 1×6 = 6 and 2×3 = 6. Equal — they are equivalent!
