Different fractions can name the same amount — they are equivalent!
Two fractions are EQUIVALENT if they take up the same amount of the whole, even if they look different. For example, 1/2 and 2/4 and 3/6 all describe the same-sized piece of a whole.
1/2 of a rectangle
2/4 of a rectangle
1/2 = 2/4. They cover exactly the same region!
How to find equivalent fractions:
A bar split into 2 equal pieces, 1 shaded = 1/2. The same bar split into 4 pieces, 2 shaded = 2/4. Same amount of chocolate! 1/2 = 2/4.
Remember This!
To CHECK if two fractions are equivalent, cross-multiply: if a/b = c/d, then a × d should equal b × c. Example: 1/2 vs 3/6 → 1×6 = 6 and 2×3 = 6. Equal — they are equivalent!
