Fractions on a Number Line

Fractions live between whole numbers on the number line — they are numbers too!

Fractions are real numbers, and they have their own place on the number line! To place a fraction on a number line, divide the space between two whole numbers into equal parts — the denominator tells you how many parts.

How to place 3/4 on a number line:

1Draw a number line from 0 to 1
2The denominator is 4, so divide the line into 4 equal spaces
3Label each mark: 0/4, 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4
4Count 3 spaces from 0 — that is where 3/4 lives!

Number line from 0 to 1 split into fourths:

|—0/4—|—1/4—|—2/4—|—3/4—|—4/4—|

3/4 is three jumps of 1/4 from zero. It is between 1/2 and 1.

0<14<24<34<10 < \frac{1}{4} < \frac{2}{4} < \frac{3}{4} < 1
🚶Walking to school
If school is 1 kilometer away, and you have walked 2/3 of the way,
you are 2 of the 3 equal sections along your path.
Just 1/3 more to go!
💡

Remember This!

A fraction with the numerator equal to the denominator (like 4/4 or 3/3) always equals 1 whole — you have ALL the equal parts!
