Area & Perimeter

Perimeter measures around a shape; area measures the space inside it!

PERIMETER is the total distance around the outside edge of a shape — add up all the side lengths. AREA measures how much surface is covered inside the shape — count the square units or use length × width for rectangles.

Perimeter = distance around. Area = space inside.

🏡A rectangular garden
A garden is 8 m long and 5 m wide.

Perimeter = 8 + 5 + 8 + 5 = 26 m
  (add all four sides)

Area = 8 × 5 = 40 m²

Remember This!

Perimeter uses regular units (m, cm). Area uses SQUARE units (m², cm²). If you forget which is which, remember: Area is a 2D measurement, so its unit has a superscript 2.
