Mass & Liquid Volume

Measure how heavy things are (mass) and how much liquid fits inside (volume)!

MASS measures how much matter is in an object. We use grams (g) and kilograms (kg). LIQUID VOLUME measures how much liquid a container holds. We use milliliters (mL) and liters (L). Knowing these units lets us read scales and measuring cups!

Mass units

1 gram (g) ≈ a small paperclip1 kilogram (kg) = 1,000 grams ≈ a textbook

Volume units

1 milliliter (mL) ≈ a few drops1 liter (L) = 1,000 mL ≈ a large water bottle

Use grams and mL for small amounts; use kilograms and liters for large amounts.

Remember This!

Remember: 1 kg = 1,000 g and 1 L = 1,000 mL. When a problem mixes units, convert to the smaller unit before computing.
