Decimals to the Hundredths

Decimals are another way to write fractions with denominators of 10 or 100!

A DECIMAL is a number with a decimal point (.) that separates the whole number part from the fractional part. The first place after the decimal point is tenths (1/10), and the second place is hundredths (1/100).

Decimal place value:

Tens | Ones | . | Tenths | Hundredths 1 | 2 | . | 3 | 4 → reads as 12.34

12.34 = 12 + 3/10 + 4/100 = 12 + 30/100 + 4/100 = 12 + 34/100

Fractions and decimals are two ways of naming the same values!

💰Money is decimals in disguise!
$1.35 = 1 dollar + 35 cents
= 1 + 35/100
= 1.35

"Cents" literally means hundredths!

Comparing decimals (e.g., 0.6 vs 0.42):

1Align the decimal points
2Compare digit by digit from the left
3Tenths place: 6 vs 4 → 6 > 4
4So 0.6 > 0.42 (even though 0.42 has more digits!)

Remember This!

To compare decimals easily, write them with the same number of decimal places by adding zeros. 0.6 = 0.60. Now compare 0.60 and 0.42 — clearly 0.60 is bigger.
