Fraction Equivalence & Ordering

Generate equivalent fractions and put fractions in order from least to greatest!

Two fractions are EQUIVALENT when they represent the same amount. To ORDER fractions, we compare their sizes. The easiest comparisons are those that share the same numerator or the same denominator.

Comparing fractions with the SAME denominator:

1When denominators match, just compare the numerators
3/7 vs 5/7 → same size pieces (sevenths), so 5 pieces > 3 pieces
3/7 < 5/7

Comparing fractions with the SAME numerator:

1When numerators match, compare the denominators
2/5 vs 2/9 → same number of pieces (2), but ninths are smaller slices
2/9 < 2/5 (bigger denominator = smaller pieces)

Comparing fractions with DIFFERENT numerators and denominators:

1Find a common denominator (LCD)
2Convert both fractions to equivalent fractions with the LCD
3Compare the numerators
📊Ordering 3/4, 1/2, and 5/8
LCD of 4, 2, 8 is 8.
3/4 = 6/8, 1/2 = 4/8, 5/8 = 5/8
Order: 4/8 < 5/8 < 6/8 → 1/2 < 5/8 < 3/4
12<58<34\frac{1}{2} < \frac{5}{8} < \frac{3}{4}

Remember This!

Use benchmark fractions to estimate! 0, 1/2, and 1 are handy benchmarks. Is your fraction close to 0, close to 1/2, or close to 1? That gives you a quick ordering strategy.
