Mixed Numbers & Improper Fractions

A mixed number combines a whole and a fraction — and you can write it two ways!

A MIXED NUMBER has a whole number part and a fraction part, like 2¾. An IMPROPER FRACTION has a numerator larger than its denominator, like 11/4. You can convert freely between the two forms — they name exactly the same amount!

Mixed numbers

2¾ = 2 whole pizzas + ¾ of one3½ = 3 wholes + ½5⅓ = 5 wholes + ⅓

Improper fractions

11/4 (11 quarter-slices)7/2 (7 half-slices)16/3 (16 third-slices)

Both forms are equally valid — choose whichever makes your computation easier!

Mixed number → improper fraction:

1Multiply the whole number by the denominator

2Add the numerator

3Write that sum over the same denominator

4Example: 2¾ → (2 × 4) + 3 = 11 → answer: 11/4

Improper fraction → mixed number:

1Divide the numerator by the denominator

2The quotient becomes the whole number part

3The remainder becomes the new numerator (keep the same denominator)

4Example: 11/4 → 11 ÷ 4 = 2 remainder 3 → answer: 2¾

2\frac{3}{4} = \frac{(2 \times 4) + 3}{4} = \frac{11}{4}

Remember This!

When adding or subtracting mixed numbers, handle whole parts and fraction parts separately. When multiplying or dividing mixed numbers, convert to improper fractions first.
