Area and perimeter are not just formulas on a page — they solve real problems! Perimeter is used to find the length of fencing, trimming, or borders. Area is used to find how much carpet, paint, or flooring is needed.

🏡Fencing a yard (perimeter problem)

A rectangular yard is 15 m long and 9 m wide.
Fence needed = perimeter = 2 × (15 + 9) = 2 × 24 = 48 m.
You need 48 meters of fencing.

🎨Painting a wall (area problem)

A wall is 6 m wide and 4 m tall.
Area = 6 × 4 = 24 m².
If one can of paint covers 6 m², you need 24 ÷ 6 = 4 cans.

P = 2(l + w) \qquad A = l \times w

Unknown SIDE (given area)

Area = 36 m², one side = 4 mMissing side = 36 ÷ 4 = 9 m

Unknown SIDE (given perimeter)

Perimeter = 28 m, one side = 8 mOther side: 28 ÷ 2 − 8 = 14 − 8 = 6 m

You can work BACKWARDS from area or perimeter to find a missing side length!

Remember This!

When a problem gives area and asks for a side length, use DIVISION. Area = length × width, so length = Area ÷ width. Algebra thinking starts here!
