Converting Measurement Units

Convert between larger and smaller units using multiplication and division!

Measurement units come in families. Within each family, units are related by fixed conversion factors. Knowing these conversion factors lets us switch between units by multiplying (going to smaller units) or dividing (going to larger units).

Key conversion facts:

1 km = 1,000 m1 m = 100 cm1 kg = 1,000 g1 L = 1,000 mL1 hour = 60 minutes1 minute = 60 seconds1 foot = 12 inches1 yard = 3 feet

Memorize these! They are the building blocks of all unit conversions.

Converting 5 km to meters:

1We are going from a LARGER unit (km) to a SMALLER unit (m)
2Going smaller โ†’ MULTIPLY
5 km ร— 1,000 = 5,000 m

Converting 180 minutes to hours:

1We are going from a SMALLER unit (min) to a LARGER unit (hours)
2Going larger โ†’ DIVIDE
180 รท 60 = 3 hours
5ย km=5ร—1000ย m=5000ย m5 \text{ km} = 5 \times 1000 \text{ m} = 5000 \text{ m}
๐ŸƒMarathon distance
A marathon is 42.195 km.
How many meters is that?
42.195 ร— 1,000 = 42,195 meters.
That is a lot of running!

Remember This!

Memory trick: SMALLER units have SMALLER amounts of each โ€” so you need MORE of them. Going from km to m? Multiply (you need 1,000 meters for every 1 kilometer).
