A pattern is a sequence that follows a rule. When two related number patterns share the same rule, you can plot their paired values as ordered pairs (x, y) on a coordinate grid to see a visual relationship.
Pattern A (x): 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 (rule: add 1) Pattern B (y): 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 (rule: add 2) Paired: (0,0), (1,2), (2,4), (3,6), (4,8) Notice: every y value is always twice the x value!
Reading Ordered Pairs
"Run before you jump" â go along the x-axis, then up the y-axis.
When two patterns have a consistent relationship, the points on the coordinate grid will form a straight line!
Remember This!
To check your pattern, subtract consecutive terms. If the difference is always the same, you have an arithmetic pattern.
Pattern X: 0, 2, 4, 6. Pattern Y: 0, 3, 6, 9. What is the relationship between Y and X?
