When a math expression has more than one operation, we need an agreed-upon order. PEMDAS tells us that order: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division (left to right), Addition and Subtraction (left to right).

3 + 6 × (5 + 4) ÷ 3 − 7 Step 1 (Parentheses): 3 + 6 × 9 ÷ 3 − 7 Step 2 (×÷ left→right): 3 + 54 ÷ 3 − 7 → 3 + 18 − 7 Step 3 (+− left→right): 21 − 7 = 14
Multiplication and Division are equal partners — do them left to right. Same rule for Addition and Subtraction!
