Order of Operations (PEMDAS)

Follow the rules and get the right answer every time!

When a math expression has more than one operation, we need an agreed-upon order. PEMDAS tells us that order: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division (left to right), Addition and Subtraction (left to right).

PEMDAS Steps

P โ€” Parentheses (and all grouping symbols)E โ€” ExponentsM/D โ€” Multiply & Divide (left โ†’ right)A/S โ€” Add & Subtract (left โ†’ right)

โšกStep-by-Step
3 + 6 ร— (5 + 4) รท 3 โˆ’ 7
Step 1 (Parentheses): 3 + 6 ร— 9 รท 3 โˆ’ 7
Step 2 (ร—รท leftโ†’right): 3 + 54 รท 3 โˆ’ 7 โ†’ 3 + 18 โˆ’ 7
Step 3 (+โˆ’ leftโ†’right): 21 โˆ’ 7 = 14

Multiplication and Division are equal partners โ€” do them left to right. Same rule for Addition and Subtraction!

Remember This!

Underline or circle each step as you solve it. This prevents skipping steps and helps you catch mistakes.
