Give every point its own address on the grid!
The coordinate plane has two number lines that cross at a point called the origin (0, 0). The horizontal line is the x-axis, and the vertical line is the y-axis. Every point has an address called an ordered pair (x, y).
Parts of the Coordinate Plane
In Grade 5, we only use the first quadrant (both x and y are positive).
Plotting the point (4, 3)
Imagine the coordinate plane as a treasure map. "Go 5 east and 2 north" = point (5, 2). Always state east/west (x) before north/south (y).
Remember This!
"Over then up" â always move along the x-axis first, then up (or down) along the y-axis. The x-value is the first coordinate, always.
A point is located 3 units to the right of the origin and 7 units up. What is its ordered pair?
