Plot fractions and read data like a scientist!
A line plot is a number line with X marks above values to show how many times each value occurs. When data includes fractions (like measurements in halves, quarters, or eighths), the number line is divided into fractional parts.
Reading a Line Plot
Line plots help you see where data clusters and find the range.
Heights (in inches): ½, ½, ¾, 1, 1, 1, 1¼, 1½ Line plot has Xs at: ½ (2 Xs), ¾ (1 X), 1 (3 Xs), 1¼ (1 X), 1½ (1 X) Most common height: 1 inch. Total measurements: 9.
You can add all the values in a line plot or find the difference between the largest and smallest (the range)!
Remember This!
When adding fractional data from a line plot, group whole numbers first, then add the fractions together using a common denominator.
