Know the conversion facts and multiply or divide your way!
We use two main measurement systems: the metric system (kilometers, meters, centimeters, grams, liters) and the customary system (miles, feet, inches, pounds, cups). To convert within a system, you multiply or divide by the conversion factor.

Larger unit → smaller unit: MULTIPLY. Smaller unit → larger unit: DIVIDE.
Convert 3.5 km to meters: km → m is larger to smaller, so multiply. 3.5 × 1,000 = 3,500 m. Convert 48 inches to feet: in → ft is smaller to larger, so divide. 48 ÷ 12 = 4 ft.
Remember This!
Memory trick: going from big to small units is like zooming in — the number gets BIGGER. Going from small to big is like zooming out — the number gets SMALLER.
