Ratio Tables and Tape Diagrams

Ratio tables and tape diagrams are powerful tools for scaling and solving proportion problems!

A RATIO TABLE organizes equivalent ratios in rows, making it easy to scale quantities up or down. A TAPE DIAGRAM uses rectangular bars (segments of tape) to model the parts of a ratio. Both tools help you visualize and solve ratio problems.

Each row multiplies the original ratio by the same factor!

If the class has 40 students:
Each unit = 40 รท 8 = 5 students
Boys = 3 ร— 5 = 15   ยท   Girls = 5 ร— 5 = 25

Using a ratio table to find unknown values:

1Write the known ratio in the first row
2To scale up: multiply BOTH values by the same whole number
3To scale down: divide BOTH values by the same number
4Find the row where one value matches your target, then read the other

In a ratio table, every row is equivalent. The multiplier you use must be the SAME for both values in the ratio โ€” that's what keeps them proportional!
