Mean, Median, Mode, and Range

Describe a data set with a single number that represents the middle.

Measures of center describe a typical value in a data set. The mean is the arithmetic average. The median is the middle value when data is ordered. The mode is the most frequent value. The range measures spread โ€” the difference between the maximum and minimum values.

Computing Each Measure for: 4, 7, 7, 9, 13

1Mean: Add all values and divide by count โ†’ (4+7+7+9+13) รท 5 = 40 รท 5 = 8
2Median: Middle value when ordered โ†’ 4, 7, [7], 9, 13 โ†’ Median = 7
3Mode: Most frequent value โ†’ 7 appears twice โ†’ Mode = 7
4Range: Max โˆ’ Min โ†’ 13 โˆ’ 4 = 9

When to use Mean

Data has no extreme outliersUses all values in computationBest for symmetric distributions

When to use Median

Data has outliers (very high or low values)Not affected by extreme valuesBest for skewed distributions (like income)

Mean is pulled toward outliers. Median is resistant to them.

Remember This!

For median with an even number of data points, average the two middle values. Example: {3, 5, 8, 10} โ†’ median = (5 + 8) รท 2 = 6.5
