Statistical vs. Non-Statistical Questions

A statistical question expects variability in the data.

A statistical question is one where you expect the data to vary — collecting many answers and looking at the distribution is meaningful. A non-statistical question has a single definitive answer. Statistics is about understanding patterns in variation.

Statistical Questions

"How many minutes do 6th graders sleep?" (answers vary)"What are the heights of students in class?" (answers vary)"How much do apples cost at different stores?" (answers vary)

Non-Statistical Questions

"How tall is the school flagpole?" (one answer)"What time does school start?" (one answer)"How many students are in this class right now?" (one answer)

If different people or measurements give different answers, it's a statistical question.
